Macbeth

WRITING ASSIGNMENT #1 -

Macbeth

PROMPT

Your assignment is to write a complete composition about the background information

you researched at the beginning of this unit.

PREWRITING

Start by looking at the notes you took as you were gathering information. Then, look at

the fact sheet you and the members of your group compiled. Think of one statement you could

make about all this information. That will be the main idea of your paper. Can the information

you have gathered be put into categories? (Are there some things that naturally go together?) Is

there a logical progression of ideas? (Can your information be put in chronological order? If so,

do it.)

DRAFTING

First write a paragraph in which you introduce the topic of your composition. The

paragraphs in the body of your composition will all support or explain your main topic. The

paragraphs should flow from idea to idea (from category to category, or in chronological order

from earliest to latest, etc.). Your final paragraph should include the conclusions you can draw

from the information presented and should bring your composition to a close.

PROMPT

When you finish the rough draft of your paper, ask a student who sits near you to read it.

After reading your rough draft, he/she should tell you what he/she liked best about your work,

which parts were difficult to understand, and ways in which your work could be improved.

Reread your paper considering your critic's comments, and make the corrections you think are

necessary.

PROOFREADING

Do a final proofreading of your paper double-checking your grammar, spelling,

organization, and the clarity of your ideas.

WRITING ASSIGNMENT #3 -

Beowulf

PROMPT

Everyone hopes that after their death they will not be forgotten. We hope to live our

lives in such a fashion that our deeds and/or our words will outlive us. Beowulf was very much

aware of the transitory nature of life, and he made it his mission to be famous so that his name

would not be extinguished upon his death.

Oftentimes luck and longevity play important roles in how we are perceived after death,

but more importantly, it is how we live our lives that will determine our fame and “immortality”.

You can increase your chances of being remembered by taking active measures during your life

to insure your fame.

Your assignment is to think of a way that you can combine one of your passions or

desires with a plan to become famous after your death. Make a detailed plan for the execution of

this plan and use your imagination!

PREWRITING

A good way to start is to focus on your passions. What do you love to do? What ideas

do you possess that could possible succeed you? Jot these possibilities down on a piece of paper.

Make detailed notes of how you could achieve immortality.

Now, stop and think about what you can practically do to achieve these aspirations.

Make a list. Are there certain steps that you must follow first? Is there anything prohibiting

you from advancing towards these dreams at this point in your life?

DRAFTING

You should begin with an opening paragraph in which you grab the attention of the

reader by announcing your lofty ambition. Be precise about your reasons for this desire in the

first paragraph.

The body of your composition should provide a plan of action or a timeline of what you

must accomplish in your life to insure fame after your death. Be certain that each supporting

paragraph is well-developed.

Write a concluding paragraph about the likelihood of your success given the plan that

you have outlined in your paper.

PROOFREADING

Do a final proofreading of your paper double-checking your grammar, spelling,

organization, and the clarity of your ideas.

WRITING ASSIGNMENT #2 -

Beowulf Due Sunday, September 20th

PROMPT

It has been written that Grendel’s mother is, in fact, a sympathetic character in that she

acts aggressively out of the love of her slain son. Despite the fact that she commits some bloody

atrocities and takes on our hero, Beowulf, consider ways in which she may be seen as a victim

reacting to unfortunate circumstances.

Your assignment is to write a journal entry from the perspective of Grendel’s mother.

Look at the situation from where and how she lives. Justify her actions by persuading us of her

righteousness.

PREWRITING

A good place to start is to consider how Grendel’s mother came to dwell in the lake of

boiling blood in the first place. What role does fate play in how she lives out her days? What

examples of affection do we see in Grendel’s mother towards her monster-son?

Formulate an approach you want to take to the journal—and a time reference. Do you

wish to compose the journal before the carnage at Hero begins? After Grendel’s death?

Remember to be sympathetic. Pay careful attention to the tone of your journal.

DRAFTING

You should begin your persuasive journal assignment by dating the entry and placing it

in a “field of time” (

e.g. before Grendel’s twelve-year assault on Herot, before Grendel’s

mother’s revenge for the death of her son, Grendel’s mother’s anticipation of her struggle with

Beowulf, etc.
