Parent Notes

Hello Parents,

As an English teacher at Valley, my main job is to help my students understand more about English.  While doing so, I hope to teach my students how to be confident communicators, good citizens, and complex problem-solvers.  I'm also here to teach my students how to make wise choices about academics and behavior.  Feel free to contact me by e-mail or phone if you have concerns.  Thank you for trusting me with your beautiful sons and daughters.

Find useful links under my Bookmarks Manager "Top Folder" file.  You can take lots of different practice tests in math, science, and language arts.  The English interactives are quite fun!  In fact, "Free Rice" is a website that can be quite addictive for budding wordsmiths.

7th ENGLISH CORE STUDENTS

Classwork, Homework, Learning Logs and Tests, AR Nightly Reading Logs, AR activities, Portfolios:

Your 3-ring binder/portfolio (which reflects your progress throughout the year) is kept at home.  This is how you will organize/record/track your individual progress.

Don't forget to post your AR reading logs on the refrigerator at home (30-minutes minimum x 5 times weekly at home). These are turned in every two weeks.  PARENT SIGNATURES ARE MANDATORY!!  Be impeccably honest!  AR reading logs, learning logs, tests,  classroom activities and homework will become part of your portfolio.

One creative book review is due each quarter. Effort equals achievement.   You'll be surprised how quickly you'll see remarkable results with consistent effort on your part.   Ideas for book reviews can be found on my webpage under AR Activities

Your classwork will be kept in your classroom file until it gets too full.  When it's full, you will need to sort these materials into your portfolio at home.   All classroom work should be saved in a 3-ring portfolio at home!    Periodically,  we will set aside time to talk about different organizational astructures.  You will organize your classroom notes, AR reading logs and activities, tests, grammar and vocabulary work each quarter to assess your progress.  Don't throw finished work away.  Your knowledge is CUMULATIVE!   Besides, you will assess your portfolio, your parents will assess your portfolio, and I will assess them, too!  It validates how much work you've been doing.Laughing

WRITING FUNDAMENTALS LAB STUDENTS

Journals, 2-pocket folder, portfolios:

Your writing journal will be kept in the classroom, along with a 2-pocket folder. We will be adding writing to your journal every class period.  We will be keeping your proofreading and sentence composing practice in a 2-pocket folder as a way of organizing/recording/tracking your learning.    This is a great way of keeping your work organized, reflecting on your progress, and working toward your portfolio goals.   Periodically, writing portfolios will organized and assessed each quarter.  Don't throw your work away.  It's proof that you're making progress.Laughing

Ciao Ragazzi!

Well, we've only just begun!   I can tell already some of you 7th graders will do a great job of  organizing, planning ahead, keeping track of assignments, and managing your time.  Others will do well with reading logs, participating in class, and taking  tests.   We all have to work together and communicate (students, parents, counselors, teachers, and administrators) to be successful.  Laughing
