Dear Parent and Students;

Welcome to the school year 2007-2008.

Life and physical science content are integrate in a curriculum with two primary goals:  (1) students will value and use science as a process of obtaining knowledge based on observable evidence, and (2) students’ curiosity will be sustained as they develop the abilities associated with scientific inquiry.   This course builds upon students’ experience with integrated science in grades seven and eight and the springboard course for success in biology, chemistry, geology, and physics.

COURSE THEME:

The theme for Earth Systems Science is SYSTEMS.   The “Benchmarks” in the Earth Systems Science Core emphasize “systems” as an organizing concept to understand life on Earth, geological change, and the interaction of atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere.  Earth Systems Science provides students with an understanding of how the parts of a system interact.   The concept of matter cycling and energy flowing is used to help understand how systems on planet Earth are interrelated.

Earth Systems Science provides opportunities for students to gain insights into science related careers which adds to the relevance of science learning.   The topics in Earth Systems Science introduce students to fundamental concepts related to careers in geology, hydrology, meteorology, and ecology.   This is an excellent opportunity for students to broaden their understanding of careers in these areas.   Resources related to careers and more information about the course can be found at the Utah Science Home Page at http://www.usoe.k12.ut.us/curr/science.

Students are REQUIRED to come PREPARED to class with following items:

1.         A 3-prong expandable binder at the beginning of each quarter.   This

will be your SCIENCE NOTEBOOK.  You need dividers for the notebook to separate different units, as well as loose-leaf paper for notes (paper with 3 holes punched work best).   ASSIGNMENT TRACKER will be provided in class to write down what was assigned each day.   All assignments, notes, labs, etc. must be organized according to date of completion and kept in your SCIENCE NOTEBOOK.   Your notebook will be checked at  the end of each quarter and count as approx.  10% of your science grade.

2.         Please, always bring your pencils, pen, colored pencils, and rulers.

3.         Textbooks will be issued, please always bring your book to class, the textbook

need to have a book cover.   Remember that each student is responsible for the text book issued,  a bar code will identify your assigned book.   Do not damage the bar code,  a fine will result if the book is lost or damaged.

4.         A notebook for STARTERS.   Please check the whiteboard each day for a STARTER.   You will be asked a question that you will answer in your own words at the beginning of each of your science period (10 min.)   Answer in complete sentences….  More about this later.   Your STARTER notebook will be graded and turned in periodically during the quarter.

STUDENTS WILL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR FOLLOWING SCHOOL AND CLASSROOM RULES REGARDING BEHAVIOR, DRESS CODE, AND TARDY AND ABSENCE POLICIES.       These policies are found in your student planner.    PLEASE READ THEM AND FOLLOW THEM!
