Power Standards and Learning Targets

This semester course provides students with a major emphasis on the principles and design of a website as well as advanced Internet skills and techniques.  HTML, web publishing and graphic editing software will be used to design, create, format and edit web pages.

Unit 1:  Basic Internet Concepts
The students will understand that the internet can be a reliable tool that can be used to access and share information if they can learn to evaluate sources for reliability and authenticity.

  • I can describe the purpose of an Acceptable Use Policy.
  • I can define basic internet concepts (see vocabulary lists).
  • I can discuss methods of posting information to the web while maintaining safety.
  • I can list the different types of web sites on the internet and their purposes including:  informational, commercial, educational, personal, and portals.
  • I can use resources on the internet to enhance my learning and my websites such as shareware, freeware, hex code charts, graphics sites, and tutorials.
  • I can create a blog and use it to share information on the internet.

Unit 2:  Planning Your Web Page
The students will understand that an effective web page is well thought out in terms of purpose, audience, design principles, layout and file structure.

  • I can define the target audience for my web site.
  • I can explain the purpose of my web site.
  • I can define the design principles including:  color, white space, font styles, background images, balance, consistency, readability, proportion and navigation.
  • I can plan a web site that uses the design principles to enhance its effectiveness.
  • I can draw a storyboard or thumbnail sketch of all the elements in my web site including text, graphics, multimedia, hyperlinks, etc.
  • I can use proper naming conventions and file structure in my web sites.

Unit 3:  Using HTML to Design a Web Page
The students will understand that HTML is the programming language used to write web pages and htat even though there are web editors available to write web pages, a solid understanding of HTML is necessary to be a successful web designer.

  • I can write HTML tages to create structure in my web page.
  • I can discuss the difference between container and empty tags.
  • I can define nesting and us it to create structure in my web page.
  • I can use the four primary tags:  HTML, HEAD, TITLE, BODY
  • I can use the following formatting tags:  Headline levels, paragraph tags, line breaks, and horizontal rules.
  • I can create an ordered list and an unordered list.
  • I can use attributes to add interest to my page including:  color, alignment, and width.
  • I can use the advanced formatting tags including:  font, bold, italic, blockquote, small, large, center.
  • I can create hyperlinks and email links.
  • I can add an image to my web page.
  • I can use tables to create structure on my web page.

Unit 4:  Using Images to Enhance Your Web Page
The students will understand that image software can help prepare images that will add visual appel to their web sites.

  • I can open and save an image in a web friendly format such as jpeg or gif.
  • I can crop and resize various images.
  • I can add a border or a drop shadow to an image.
  • I can optimize an image to decrease load time.
  • I can create a cutout or remove the background from an image.
  • I can make buttons for a navigation bar.
  • I can use a scanner or a digital camera to incorporate photos on my web pages.

Unit 5:  Using a Web Editor to Design a Web Page
The students will understand that web editors such as DreamWEaver can be an effective and efficient wy to create attractive web pages.

  • I can use the following formatting tags:  Headline levels, paragraph tags, line breaks, and horizontal rules
  • I can create an ordered list and an unordered list.
  • I can use attributes to add interst to my page including:  color, alignment, and width.
  • I can use the advanced formatting tags including:  font, bold, italic, blockquote, small, large, center.
  • I can create hyperlinks and email links.
  • I can add an image to my web page.
  • I can use tables to help create structure on my page.
  • I can link a document to my web page.
  • I can post a web site to the internet.
