About Mr. Mac

After high school I did cement work with my dad and two brothers for about ten years. While doing the cement business I learned how to work hard and started taking college night classes. I graduated from the University of Utah in 2002 with a teaching degree in Mathematics and Political Science. I am going into my sixth year of teaching at Oly jr. and have loved almost every second of  it. I have coached and assisted the boys basketball team for five seasons and last year got to coach the girls team. I look forward to coaching again this year. I have also been the chess coach for the last five yearsand enjoyed that very much. I have also loved working with the SBO's as their advisor. Every year the SBO's of OJH have accomplished  great things. This year I look forward to more great things. I am currently working on a  master's degree in curriculum and instruction at the University of Phoenix. I am married to my wonderful wife Chris McIntyre (she is amazing) and we have a baby boy (Ian Robert) coming very soon, like in two weeks or less!!!

Hobbies/Interests

I love to fish. I love wood working. I am getting better at building concrete countertops and  concrete coffee tables. I like going to the gym, and I love going with my wife. I cannot wait to spend tons of time with our new baby boy Ian. I also look forward to lots of camping trips with my wife and Ian. I also like watching hummingbirds from my deck.

Education Beliefs

I believe that every student can learn math. I love teaching math a variety of ways and look forward to challenging kids with interesting math problems and situations. I will do whatever it takes to help your child learn math. I believe that every student can be successful in my math class if they will only try. The more effort they put into the class the more knowledge they will walk away with. I want all my students to learn from this class that effort and hard work will help them succeed in life. I want my students to learn how to work with others to solve problems. The world we live in today requires that our young people work with each other to find solutions to some very tough real life situations. I believe in using as much technology as possible to teach math. I do not claim to be an expert in technology. I welcome ideas and help from both young and old, to help me teach using technology in the classroom.

Parents and Students

Please be ready and willing to work together on some math problems. There will be times when your kids are asked to teach you some mathematics. There will be other times when you will be asked to learn the math together using a webquest. Please come ready to learn and enjoy all that mathematics has to offer.

Assignments

Yes We Love Technology

For Pre-algebra this year you will need to create a yahoo e-mail account. The reason I want to do this is to provide you with an opportunity to learn through the use of technology and from your peers. E-mail is a wonderful way to communicate and share ideas. The ultimate would be having all of you e-mailing each other sharing ideas on how to solve problems. I will be able to e-mail most of your assignments, and you will be able to e-mail them back to me.  Your first assignment is to create a  yahoo e-mail account and send me an e-mail that either describes your favorite hobby, favorite animal or why you like or dislike math (just pick one). If you want to earn 10 points extra credit find a power  point presentation on order of operations, go through it and send me the URL of the ppt file.

The yahoo service is free and the process is very simple. Simply go to yahoo.com and follow the directions. Your email account should have your last names initial then your first name followed by macalgebra then the class period you are in. For example if bryan williams was in my third period prealgebra class his e-mail would look like:

wbryanmacprealgebra3@yahoo.com

Please remember to write down your email address and password immediately. You have until Friday Aug. 31 to get your account and send me an e-mail. If you have no access to a computer or your parents do not want you to participate then I can give you optional book assignments throughout the year. Please just let me know your situation and I will be as flexible as possible.

I almost forgot!! My e-mail is turty3@yahoo.com
