Algebra

Welcome to Mr. Mac’s Algebra class at Olympus Jr. High! I am way excited to be working, teaching, and learning with you. We will be covering the state core requirements. If you want to see the core curriculum go to this website: http://www.graniteschools.org/C7/C19/MathK-12/Pre%20Algebra1/MAPnew-PreAlg.pdf

To most effectively cover the core requirements, I will use a variety of teaching methods. Students will learn through hands-on activities/discoveries, Ti-73 graphing calculators, Geometer’s Sketchpad, Excel spreadsheets, team work, foldables, and projects. (One project you will enjoy is the create your own business project.)

Classroom Rule: All students have the right to learn free from distractions.

Grading Policy:

  1. Assignments/Projects/Technology – 40% - Class work will be everyday. Homework will mostly be done using the computer with e-mail, e-boards, and the internet. (Is Mr. Mac serious?) (Yes!)
  2. Tests- 50% - Test retakes are always offered and encouraged. Test corrections are also strongly encouraged. (This is how we all truly learn, by making mistakes and then going back and fixing them.)
  3. Foldables – 5% - Foldables will include important math concepts, your thinking processes, any notes you take during class, and any helpful mnemonic device we can come up with to remember math.
  4. Bell Work – 5% - As class begins there will be a problem on the board. You will be expected to be in your seat and working on the problem before the tardy bell rings, otherwise you will be marked tardy.

Grading Scale: A 93-100, A- 90-92, B+ 87-89, B 83-86, B- 79-82, C+ 75-78, C 71-74, C- 67-70, D+ 63-66, D 56-62,    and F 0-55. (Don’t go here)

Late Policy on Tests and Homework:

All tests, class work and homework must be made up within one week after returning to school from a sickness or school excused absence.

Help Sessions: I am in my room before and after school every day. I want to help you succeed. Please come get help if you need it.

Citizenship: Follows the school policy and is graded as such. Please see the student manual.

Technology: I am trying something new this year; all students will be asked to create a yahoo e-mail account for my class. The students will be sent homework problems, web quests, or other cool math related things and will send back their solutions (along with HOW they got their answers).

I also would like to set up an e-board for each class. The e-board is a place where only my students and I and parents if you wish can go to discuss math problems. The e-board is limited to only the people I invite to the group, which means your child is safe. If your child has no access to the internet and cannot go to the library, or if you do not wish for your child to participate in this project, I will not hold it against them and they can be given optional assignments. Please sign below and check the appropriate boxes to let me know what you want for your child.

Dear, parents I would also like your e-mail so that I can send you their homework assignments also.
