Parent Notes

  FRIENDLY REMINDERS

SEP -1st Trimester Goals - Please make sure that you regularly review the first Trimester Goals that we have set together with your child to insure that they are successful in accomplishing their goals.

Public Library Visits - I highly encourage you to take your child(ren) to a nearby Public Library on a regular basis.  To find a location of a nearby Public Library click here: http://www.slcolibrary.org/cfml/libmap.cfm  There is no cost involved to get a library card or to borrow books.  Late fees and lost book charges can often be "read off" at the library.  Libraries often allow children to read a certain number of minutes to a librarian to have any late fees or lost book charges forgiven.

We are currently working on a Native American Project where the children are creating ABC Books based on their assigned North, South, or Central Native American Tribe.  Plus, each child has a social studies goal this trimester to read a book about Native Americans.  So, visiting a Public Library would be extremely helpful to your child's ability to accomplish these two activities.

If you are interested in doing something to help the students at Hunter Elementary, here are a few options:

  • Volunteer In Our Classroom - Mrs. Smith is looking for volunteers to teach basic Spanish, French, and ?? for 30 minutes once a week; and a volunteer who would be willing to make copies for our class on a weekly basis (usually takes about 1-1.5 hours/week).  Contact Mrs. Smith either my calling the school office or by emailing her at dlsmith1@graniteschools.org
  • Collect BOX TOPS from boxed foods that you use at home.  Send the BOX TOPS in with your child.  The school is given a donation from General Mills for each BOX TOP turned in.  Last year, we raised $1,516, this year's goal is to raise $3,000!

Check out the great information and articles on www.pta.org

It's the official web site of the Parent Teacher Association and they have wonderful, helpful information about raising children and helping your child get the best out of school.  It's definitely worth the time to check out!

Assignments

FYI - HOMEWORK and OTHER ASSIGNMENTS

Club Homework is on Tuesday after school!  Don't forget to sign the permission slip so your child can attend.

THIS WEEK's Homework Packet is DUE FRIDAY, October 16th.  This week's packet includes:

Time For Kids Magazine - You will find the Time for Kids (TFK) Magazine along with some comprehension worksheets.  Students should read the entire magazine (it can count toward their daily 20 minute reading assignment) and answer the questions in complete sentences.

Math - We have been working on understanding how to tell time and elasped time.

DAILY READING ASSIGNMENT - Each student is required to read a minimum of 20 minutes a day at home.  It is best if students read out loud during this time in order to improve their fluency and decoding skills.  This assignment makes up 20% of their reading grade so it is important that you sign your child's planner each night after they've finished their reading.

PLANNERS - Students have received their Planners where they are required to track their homework assignments, and write down any unfinished classwork, assignments, title of the book they read and number of minutes read (Daily Home Reading Assignment), and their weekly spelling words.  There is a box for each day of the week at the bottom of the weekly view of their planner for parents signature for completion of Daily Home Reading Assignment.

TYPING - Students should be practicing at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/ 5 minutes per day.
