| Messages Welcome to Chemistry! Ready to burn stuff, make ink, make cheese, make batteries, make messes, solve crimes, get greasy, get smart, get busy, get awards, work magic, work hard and learn unimaginable things about the unimaginably tiny world around us? Good, so am I. I’m glad we’re in this together. First quarter we'll be investigating the chemistry of the natural world and the history of chemistry. We'll use chemistry techniques and math to create recipes for ink, candles and cheese as we learn about taking accurate and precise measurements, converting recipes, and determining and using percent composition. Then we'll turn our talents to determining "Is the Jordan River polluted? If so how?". We'll learn about elements, compounds, mixtures and ions as we take samples and investigate local water chemistry. How you’ll be evaluated: There will be several (4-6) major opportunities to show me your understanding. To earn credit, ALL of them must be turned in and show at least an initial level of understanding. During the first quarter these will include: -midterm test on chemistry math and calculation skills, lab measurement skills, and percent composition. -2 major lab notebook reviews (which includes homework!) -Reseach proposal for studying the Jordan River due at the end of the quarter. You will also receive a citizenship grade based on your effort in class, how on time your work is and your attendance. You must consistently turn in work on time to receive credit in this class. You will have homework most nights and will turn in your lab notebook each Monday for me to check it. I will update information on SIS by Wednesday of each week. If you have questions about the City Academy assesment system, please ask! A few things you need: -Goggles. The school will sell them to you for $5. Pay Sara at the front desk. -A Lab Notebook. A spiral notebook for lab and class work. It must be dedicated to this class and only this class. You must have it by the end of the first week.
Office hours: If you need help or have questions please come see me anytime. I will make sure to always be available on Tuesdays before and after school, but you can also schedule other times to meet with me. I will gladly guide you on homework you don’t understand. Thanks, shea@cityacademyslc.org 596-0326 (h) 596-8489 (s) <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--> | Assignments The best place to check for assignment updates is on the SIS database. That way you can see what you're missing and what we've done. All students and parents should now have passwords that enable them to log on. If you do not know your password, contact your advisor.
