COURSE: Gateway to Technology

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is a project based learning class focusing on the areas of Design and Modeling, along with Automation and Robotics. Students will learn how technology is used in engineering to solve everyday problems. We will promote communication and collaboration by emphasizing a teaming approach.

*Design and Modeling:  This unit uses solid modeling to introduce students to the design process. Utilizing this design approach, students understand how solid modeling has influenced their lives. Students also learn sketching techniques, and use descriptive geometry as a component of design, measurement, and computer modeling. Using design briefs or abstracts, students create models and documentation to solve problems.

*Automation and Robotics:  Students trace the history and development of automation and robotics. They learn about structures, energy transfer, machine automation, and computer control systems. Students acquire knowledge and skills in engineering problem solving and explore requirements for careers in engineering.

GRADES: Students are graded by the work performed each day, just like in industry, as well as being graded on their starters/journals, lab/project work, class work, quizzes and tests. Each assignment will have a point value and the students grade will be determined on the point value he/she receives compared to the total point value.

Citizenship grade is determined by tardies and overall attitude in class.

** If a student is being unsafe or not following class/shop rules they will be timed out for the day. If it continues to be a problem they will be out of the class.

** Time will be allowed before and after school to make up absences or missed assignments, as per Mr. Selk’s schedule. Students will have to arrange a time with Mr. Selk to do the make up work.

CLASS RULES:        1. Follow directions the first time.

                                    2. Be prepared, in your seat, when the bell rings.

***** Parents/Guardians your support is extremely important and greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, concerns, or special needs, contact me at school. My consultation time is 7th period. Call and leave a message for me at the office or email me, and I will respond as soon as I can.

*****  To allow students to learn from others by both giving and receiving feedback and to assist me in using instructional time as efficiently as possible, I will occasionally have students correct one another’s work.
