COURSE: Exploring Technology

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Technology is the application of knowledge and resources to meet human needs and solve problems. It is the study of the man made world. Technology is human innovation in action – Inventions! Students will learn and apply the problem solving process and creative thinking skills to meet challenges in different activity areas.

GRADES: Students are graded by the work performed each day just like in industry as well as being graded on their starters/journals, lab/project work, class work, quizzes and tests. Each assignment will have a point value and the students grade will be determined on the point value he/she receives compared to the total point value.

            Citizenship grade is determined by tardies and overall attitude in class.

** If a student is being unsafe or not following class/shop rules they will be timed out for the day. If it continues to be a problem they will be out of the class.

** Time will be allowed before and after school to make up absences or missed assignments, as per Mr. Selk’s schedule. Students will have to arrange a time with Mr. Selk to do the make up work.

 

CLASS RULES:          1. Follow directions the first time.

                                    2. Be prepared, in your seat when the bell rings.

                                    3. No put downs, disrespect.

                                    4. Don’t touch or take others things.

                                    5. Practice cooperation skills.

                                    6. Work quietly.

                                    7. Work safely and wear proper safety gear (clothing and eye protection).

            To allow students to learn from others by both giving and receiving feedback and to assist me in using instructional time as efficiently as possible, I will occasionally have students correct one another/s work.

Jan. 19     Disclosure satement and overview of class, starting with Measuring Unit.

Jan. 20     Measuring Unit cont., get textbooks.

Jan. 21     A1 video " Intro to Technology" with worksheet.

Jan. 22     Read Ch. 1 and do questions from pages 9(1-3, and question on airbags), 12(1-3).

Jan. 25     Continue reading Ch. 1 and do questions on page 16(1-3). Worksheets on Ch. 1 vocabulary and test practice.

Jan. 26     A2 video with worksheet and correct all work from Ch. 1

Jan. 27     Ch. 1 Test.

Jan. 28     Correct test and review tecnologist Wanted Poster assignment.

Jan. 29     On computers researching technologist for Wanted Poster. due date Feb. 9.

Feb. 1      Read Ch. 2 Pages 24-38, taking notes as you read which can be used on your Ch. 2 test.

               Write down the vocabulary words on page 40 and write out their definitions. Draw and fill in the two graphic organizers found on pages 24 & 31.  Answer the following

               questions from the section reviews found on pg. 30 (2,3) , pg. 34 (2) , pg. 38 (3,4). restate the questions as part of your answers, so you know what the questions where

               when you are reviewing your notes.

Feb. 2      Platform Design packet, read and discuss assignment. Then continue with Ch. 2 work. Additional hondouts/worksheets. Vocab quiz and practice questions.

Feb. 3      Build platforms following specifications from yesturday. When done continue with Ch. 2 assignments.

Feb. 4      Test platforms. See what platform held the most weight. Start grading Ch. 2 assignments.

Feb. 5      Ch. 2 assignments graded.

Feb. 8      Ch. 2 Test

Feb. 9      Wanted Poster due today. Grade or finish Ch. 2 test, depending on time due to All-for-All assembies.

Feb. 10    Worksheets for General Safety and Drill Press safety.

Feb. 11    Review safety rules for general safety adn drill press and take the Safety Tests.

Feb. 12    Safety video with worksheet.

Feb. 16    Bandsaw and Disc Sander safety worksheets, review safety and take tests.

Feb. 17    Make up day for safety test and other missing work. Start on Super Clip for those who are all caught up, choose wood and start measuring clip and

               marking for holes and notches.

Feb. 18    Reading packet on Newton's first Law of Motion with worksheet.

Feb. 19    Newtons's First Law continued with Newton's Second Law with worksheet.

Feb. 22    Newton's third Law with worksheet. All three worksheets should be finished for tomorrow.

Feb. 23    Correct the three worksheets on Newton's Laws of Motion. Work on Super Clip

Feb. 24-26   Work on Super Clips.

Mar. 1-3   Super Clips cont. need to be finished by the 3rd.  When done read Ch. 4 (Design and Problem Solving) pages 72-80 in the technology book. Do

               vocabulary words at the end of chapter and the two graphic organizers.

Mar. 4     Vocab. worksheet along with test practice worksheet. Ch. 4 worksheets.

Mar. 8-12   Work on the problem solving steps with "Paper Car" assignment. Groups of three. Prototype done and tested by the 11th. Prototypes turned in on                  the 12th.

Mar. 15-17  Final Paper Car being made. Race day will be on the 17th.

Mar. 18      Review of Ch. 4 material.

Nov. 12-13  Ch. 18 The World of Construction. Two worksheets to go along with the reading of Ch. 18. Please take notes, you can use your notes on the test. Tower video for Friday.

Nov. 16   Correct worksheet #1 (Study skills and Problem solving - Math). Work on Worksheet #2 (Vocabulary & Practice test questions).

Nov. 17   Read TOWERS packet.

Nov. 18   Ch. 18 TEST

Nov. 19   Finish readin towers packet and do worksheet on the reading.

Nov. 23-24   Grade tower worksheet. Go over Technical Report and Tower Specifications. Rough sketches drawn and turned in. Final tower drawn to scale on graph paper.

Nov. 30 - Dec. 4   Tower drawing due by the 1st. Build towers for the rest of the week.

Dec. 7-8   Test towers for their Efficiency.

Dec. 9   Horsepower Activity done in class.

 Dec. 10   Power and Energy worksheet  covering Ch. 1, 2, and 3 in the power energy book

Dec. 11    Correct worksheet, decide next project (Shelf or Box).

Dec. 14-18    In shop working on shelf or box project.

Jan. 4-7   Continue in shop working on shelves and boxes.

Jan. 8   Test on Chapter 19 Building a House. Bring your notes, worksheet, and quiz if you like.
