Parent Notes

SIS is up and running, and ready for parents to login.  SIS is the sight I use for grading.  You can now log on and view your child's grades, progress report, and missing assignments from any computer.  The link is posted on the bookmarks section of the homepage.  If you would like to know your child's password, please email or call me.  I will not post passwords on line because they are private and only you should be able to see your child's grades.

The weather is getting colder and children will still be going outside for recess and p.e.  Please make sure your child wears a jacket or a coat on cold days or they will still go out without one.

I am always looking for a few parent volunteers to help in and out of the classroom.  i have typed up a list of things I need done, if anyone is interested please let me know.

  • copying each week
  • laminating
  • reading with students
  • more to come

Assignments

Students will be writing 6 book reports this year. They can complete these at their own pace, as long as they finish six by the end of the year.  I have listed 6 genres that the books must come from.  All books must be chapter books.  Please make sure your child chooses a book on his or her level.  If there is any question, I can let you know. I have the book report forms when your child is finished with a book for them to complete.  We will be discussing the different genres throughout the year, so if they're not sure what they are have them wait until we've talked about it.

READING - Boss of the Plains

We are reading a biography about John Stetson, a man who left New Jersey and traveled west searching for gold.  He never found much gold, but in 1859 he invented the most popular hat in the West.  Below are some easy ways to help your child practice reading skills.

Read Aloud

With your child, read about another inventor.  Talk about the things that led to this person's invention.  Encourage your child to think of something he or she would like to invent.

Internet Connection

Check out the Education Place website for a crossword puzzle about Boss of the Plains:  www. eduplace.com/kids/hmr/4/2/

Draw It

Ask your child to think of something he or she would like to invent.  Have your child draw a picture of the invention, and explain it to you.

Fun Fact

The first Stetson hat sold for five dollars.  Did you know that today you might pay more that fifty dollars for a Stetson?
