Parent Notes

SIS is up and running, and ready for parents to login.  SIS is the sight I use for grading.  You can now log on and view your child's grades, progress report, and missing assignments from any computer.  The link is posted on the bookmarks section of the homepage.  If you would like to know your child's password, please email or call me.  I will not post passwords on line because they are private and only you should be able to see your child's grades.

The weather is getting colder and children will still be going outside for recess and p.e.  Please make sure your child wears a jacket or a coat on cold days or they will still go out without one.

I am always looking for a few parent volunteers to help in and out of the classroom.  i have typed up a list of things I need done, if anyone is interested please let me know.

  • copying each week
  • laminating

Assignments

Students will be writing 6 book reports this year. They can complete these at their own pace, as long as they finish six by the end of the year.  I have listed 6 genres that the books must come from.  All books must be chapter books.  Please make sure your child chooses a book on his or her level.  If there is any question, I can let you know. I have the book report forms when your child is finished with a book for them to complete.  We will be discussing the different genres throughout the year, so if they're not sure what they are have them wait until we've talked about it.

READING

This week we are reading about a boy named Tomas who makes his first visit to the library.  There he finds a friend and stories he can share with his family.  As we read, we will pay attention to the order of events in the story.  Below are some easy ways to help your child practice reading skills.

Read Aloud

Ask a librarian to suggest a book on a topic that interests your child.  Together, read the book aloud.  If you wish, talk to the librarian about what it's like to work in a library.

Be a Storyteller

Take turns with your child telling stories to your family.  Invite other family members to join in with their own stories.

Bonus

The boy in the story, Tomas Rivera, grew up to be a well-known writer and teacher.  Talk with your child about how an event that happens early in a person's life can help shape that person's future.

Fun Fact

Did you know that the first training program for librarians was established by Melvin Dewey in 1887?  Prior to that date, the main requirement for a librarian was that he or she had to have read a lot of books.

Encourage your child to read at least twenty to thirty minutes a day outside of class.
