| You are on your way! Get excited about the science fair. You can search online for "science fair topics." Remember, your topic should be something you are going to enjoy and understand. Look at things that interest you, sports, animals, magnets, electricity, plants and gardens, etc. Then, when it comes time to do the work, you will be more willing to get your hands dirty! The key is to "JUST DO IT!" All Students who have completed every packet on time will get a special reward! If you miss a deadline, you miss your reward too. I have uploaded the classroom packets and assignments that will be due throughout the year. You may work on them as soon as you would like. You will find them in the section titled "My Documents." I will let you know when each step (packet) is due as soon as I coorelate dates with the upper grades. Due Dates:
Parent Notes
Dear Parents, Your child will be taking part in the JHCS Science Fair, an exciting event that encourages students to think like young scientists. During this time, your child will be designing a science project that uses the scientific method to solve a problem. We hope you agree that the educational benefits are numerous, as students develop skills in writing, oral presentation, creative thinking, and problem solving. Each student will be given instructions and handouts during class for the various steps of his or her project. It will also include the due dates for each part of the project. The work will be completed at home. For suggestions on helping your child through this process — from choosing a topic to the final report-see the Web site "Science Fair Central" school.discovery.com/sciencefaircentral/scifairstudio/parents.html This site is another good place to help your student narrow down his choices: "Science Buddies." http://www.sciencebuddies.com/
I ask that you encourage your child and monitor his or her progress along the way. Your support is ‘key’ to a successful project, but please do not allow your involvement to extend any further in order to assure equity and promote student learning! It is important that your child wrestle with problems and try to solve them. Guide your child whenever and wherever you can, but let the final project reflect your child's individual effort and design. Also, keep in mind that a successful project can be completed for under $10. Please let me know if you'd like more information on creating a successful science fair project. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to watching your child enjoy this unique opportunity for scientific discovery! And Remember, all deadlines must be met in order to qualify for the special reward that is given to the fifth grade class for all their hard work. Sincerely, Mrs. Short | ||
