SCIENTIFIC METHOD

Mini Project

1. Problem Statement: Where can I find monerans

2. Hypothesis: Can single celled bacteria called monerans grow anywhere?

3. Materials: One potato sliced to get four half inch slices.

   Four baggies

   Three Q-tips

   Pan of boiling water

Tongs to pick up the slices of potato

Permanent Marker to mark the bags

4.Variable: (What could change the results of your findings?  Is there a possible error that could have been made?  Example: you sneezed into the bag before putting the potato in it.)

5. Control: one boiled potato piece  in a zip baggy and labeled.

6. Procedure: (How did you do run your experiment?)  Slice one potato into ½ inch slices. Place four into a pan of boiling water to kill any bacteria on the potato already.  After 2-3 minutes of boiling, use the tongs and place the potato in zip lock bags and close .  Label one potato in its bag the “control potato” and set it aside.  Choose another potato bag and a Q-tip, swab the Q-tip over a possible infected area, then use that Q-tip to swap the potato, zip the bag shut, and label the bag.  Repeat this process for the next two bags with potatoes.  Place the potato bags by a warm area or vent.

7. Record: (Write down how each of the 4 potatoes looks for each of the seven days.)

8. Conclusions: (What was the result of your test? Which area of your house has more germs than another.  Did all the potatoes turn out the same?  What could cause the differences in the potates?)
