Student's Responsibilities

1. Students will be in class-with all required materials & any assignments due-before the tardy       bell rings.

2. Students will quickly and accurately follow instructions.

3. Students will raise hands to be called on before speaking out.

4. Students will conduct themselves courteously, without swearing, arguing, teasing, or bothering      others. There is no reason for students to ever touch each other in class.

5. Students will enjoy food, candy, drinks, and gum in the cafeteria, not in class unless it is a part      of an activity. Water in plastic bottles to hydrate brain cells is encouraged.

Our classroom rules are simple and direct. Each has been selected to help maintain a comfortable and effective learning environment. Basic courtesy civility, and respect-along with our Community of Caring values guide our expectations for student behavior.

Consequences for Failure to Comply

We support wholeheartedly the school=s policies and procedures for standardized dress code, tardys, absences, truancy, discipline, & school safely clearly outlined in the OJH Student Handbook. These consequences include Lunch Detention, In-School Suspension, After-School Detention, and lowering citizenship grades. We record and report violations to parents/guardians and administrators as outlined in our policies and procedures and students receive the stated consequences.

Along with these school-wide policies, I have the following consequences for students who willfully break our classroom rules, who are habitually unprepared (no book, no pen/pencil, no completed assignment on the due date), and/or whose inappropriate behavior disrupts, that is derails the teaching and learning of science.

Four (4) violations = a citizenship grade no higher than a A2"

Five (5) violations = a citizenship grade no higher than a A1"

Six (6) or more violations = a citizenship grade of A0"

*Note: Any severe violations, including aggressive acts toward students or teachers, will automatically reduce citizenship to no more than a A1". Further, cheating, dishonesty, and/or unexcused absences will result in either a A1" or a A0" (at the teacher=s discretion). There is no negotiation for situations of dishonesty, cheating, or unexcused absences.

Citizenship Improvement Contract and Honor Citizenship Contract

Students can improve their citizenship by one (1) point or if they have a”3”earn a “4” by participating in donating new socks, gloves, hats or personal hygiene products to the donation box in class. Donations are delivered to the Road Home shelter. Students  may  also donate a box of tissues or Jolly Ranchers for use in class.

Make-up Work

Students have 3 places to check for assignments; check the AAssignments in Progress@ poster on our bulletin board, expectations for what we will do are posted on the white board along with reminders of upcoming and important test and project dates and I encourage all students to pick a reliable acquaintance for a Homework Buddy, someone they can contact for additional information about what has transpired in class.

Late papers are accepted for legitimate absences. Make-up work should be completed 5 days after the student returns to class. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain missed assignments. If a student is present for the announcement of an assignment, test or project, but absent in the interim, he/she should be prepared upon his/her return. If students are present for any part of a day an assignment or project is due they are responsible for turning in that item.

Extra Credit

If all assignments have been turned in students can earn a third of a grade by attending the monthly science movie sponsored by the University of Utah or attend a science oriented presentation for any legitimate organization such as Audubon, Save Our Canyons, Red Butte Garden, or the Natural History Museum. Students must submit a typed evaluation of what they learned and their personal opinion of the activity. Extra credit must be submitted by the 8th week of each quarter.

Grade Percentages

A  = 93 % and above                           C   = 71 - 67 %

A- = 89 - 92 %                                     C- = 66 - 62 %

B+ = 88 - 85 %                                    D+ = 61 - 58 %

B   = 84 - 81 %                                     D   = 57 – 5

B-  = 80 - 77 %                                     D-  = 53 - 50

C+ = 76 - 72 %                                     F = Below 50 %

Percentages below 50% indicate an unacceptable lack of effort and/or follow through.

Class work will be stored  in individual 3-prong folders and will account for thirty percent of the academic grade.  Home work will primarily be completed in class.  Tests and projects each account for thirty five percent of a grade.  Quarterly projects will be completed primarily out of class.
