HOMEWORK

In our class, we try to make homework simple, to the point, and enjoyable!  The following is a list of what we consider homework!

1) Share 3 things learned in school that day.

2) SEP goal!

3) Minibooks: These usually come home daily, but there are a  few exceptions: no books or 2-3 books per day.  The minibooks correlate to the reading program.  Please read the book with your child and then sign the accompanying reading slip.  These book slips are tallied at the end of the month and are a part of Pizza Hut’s Book It program, resulting in a free personal pan pizza.   If the slip is lost, simply write me a note much like the slip and send it in.  It is helpful, but not mandatory that minbooks are read each night.  If you get behind, catch up when you can!

4) Worksheet Correction/Completion: Please go over the corrected worksheets when they come home.  If the answer has a check mark, please help your child check his/her work.  If I have written the answer with marker, please have your child trace it 3 times.

5) Build interpersonal skills by playing creatively with friends.  Playtime allows for creative expression, conflict resolution, and physical expercise.

If you would like additional homework for your child, the following are options you may wish to consider:

Workbooks:

You are welcome to purchase workbooks for your child.  Let your child choose the one he or she would like to do.  Their interest level will make it enjoyable and educational.  Workbooks can be found in most stores with a book section.

Puzzlebooks:

Wordsearch puzzles are great fun!  They encourage letter pattern recognition and fluent reading.  These are also available wherever books are sold.

Public Library:

Don't forget this valuable resource for great literature!  Many picture books are enticing and they have challenging text!  A great way to stimulate and encourage reading!

Parent Notes

This Week at School...

03 March, 2010   This year is just racing by so quickly!  Wow!  We can hardly believe that we are beginning our last term of the year.

Yesterday was Dr. Seuss' birthday.  Did you hear about the great things we did to celebrate this wonderful author?  We used visual media, written media, open discussions, and individual work.  We learned from the Sneetches that it's what's inside that counts.  We learned from the Zax that cooperation and compromise can end problems before they get started.  We also learned from Sam I Am that we should try it, we might like it.  Please ask us to sing our Dr. Seuss song!

What fun we are having while we learn about Australia!  We made huge portfolio pocket books to keep our papers together.  It won't be long and we will be bringing a great collection of papers home!  Please ask us about marsupials, mammals, birds, and reptiles that make Australia home.

Our study of long vowels is well underway.  English is so full of patterns it makes reading fun!!!  We studied the pattern of 'change the y to i and add es'.  We have studied the vowel consonant e pattern with all of the vowels!  We are also looking at initial blends.  We are making great progress as readers and writers!

In math, we are working on shapes and patterns.  We are also continuing with addition and subtraction.  Please ask us about our rotation day where we made triangles with geoboards, created math problems with crazy math shakers, and put together quilt puzzle blocks.  We hope you had a chance to see one of our Australia animal pattern strips!  They turned out neat!

Today we had free choice in dance.  We used body bags, big balls, elastic bands, scarves, wave makers, kites, noodles, beanies, and so much more.  Please ask us about the explorations we enjoyed with Mrs. Shumway!
