Description

At City Academy we are committed to maintaining a focus on academic progress and challenging learning for each student from 8th through 12th grades. To that end, each of our classes is taught in a demanding grade-level appropriate manner. When students’ below grade level performance in writing, math, or reading are a barrier to their academic success in secondary courses we must implement programs to help them attain the competency levels required as soon as possible. This also follows the mandate of the Federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.

In order to better address the needs of City Academy students with below grade level performance, we have implemented a Foundations of Learning program at City Academy that is mandatory and fee-based as per Utah Code 53A-13-104. The purpose of this program is to provide extended instruction in basic math, writing, and/or reading skills that prepare a student as quickly as possible for successful participation in the regular secondary curriculum.

Students are identified for and placed in this program based on state test scores in language arts and math, and/or normed reading or math assessments, academic progress reports from previous schools including City Academy, and in conjunction with teacher recommendation.

Exit Strategy/Requirement

MATH:

Students who were placed in Math Foundations at the start of the semester by low test scores or grades in past classes will need to earn a minimum of an Initial in their Math Class for two consecutive quarters, and then the approval of their Math teacher is needed to exit the program.

Students who are placed into foundations during the semester for specific skill building purposes will need to accomplish a pre-determined level of demonstrated understanding of those skills to be considered for exit at the end of the semester.  These students may each have individual plans which will determine their ability to exit.  Again, however, a minimum of an Initial must be earned to be considered for exit.

The only time any student will be considered for an exit will be at the end of the semester.

English

When students have demonstrated independent  sufficient writing on two successive writing prompts, they will  be exited as follows:
     - end of semester - if demonstrated sufficiency at quarters 1 and 2, student will be exited.
     - middle of second semester - if demonstrated sufficiency at quarters 2 and 3, student will be exited on a monitoring/consult status.
