| Basic Math Description Basic Math is a class designed to meet the inidivual needs of students who are significantly deficient in math skills. Each student has a plan to progress at and increase their skill level through a variety of mediums, including the ALEKS program (the main course of instruction) and the AGS Basic Math Skills Program. Additionally, a variety of group activities are held, including the use of manipulatives and other materials to increase understanding of mathematical concepts. Basic Math meets just after Advisory on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays and is taught by Nancy Kuhn with assistance from co-teacher Cassidy Warren. Class Routine and Assessments ROUTINE DAILY: Upon arriving to class, students get their folders out of the math crate. The routine, then, is as follows (subject to variation, depending on day and progress of students in their program): 1. Self-Start (Self-Starts are designed as a maximum of 5 minute daily practice on a variety of concepts and are issued as a packet each quarter. Students keep them in their folders for daily use.) 2. Group lesson - review of homework; review concept; introduction to new concept; application of concept, AGS Math activity, etc.
3. ALEKS computer math program TUESDAYS and THURSDAYS: Weekly progress monitoring on multiplication tables, computation and application. 4. Group closure ASSESSMENTS Students are assesed weekly on basic skills such as multiplicaton facts. Each student has a personal goal which is documented on their SIS report. Below are rubrics for some assessments students will be doing in math class. Quarter Goals & Assignments Overall Goals for Every Student Quarter 1: Students will develop confidence in tackling math problems and in recall of facts. Quarter 2: Quarter 3: Quarter 4: Assignments All assignments are listed on the Basic Math Assignment Calendar and Deanna's City Academy Calendar Student and Parent Notes August 25, 2009 Dear Parents: Your student is in Basic Math class which focuses on each student's individual needs in math. Each student will be working on their math program on ALEKS, a web based math program. More information about this will be forthcoming as soon as your student's math level is assessed the first week of school. Additionally, the AGS Basic Math Skills curriculum will be used as well as a variety of other math resources. I will be updating the Math tab on my website (listed below), so please be sure to check it for updates on math class. Materials needed for math class at this time: Pencils with erasers Spiral notebook Notebook paper All other materials will be provided, however it is fine if your student would like to use her/his own calculator, ruler, etc. Please expect your student to have homework on a regular basis. At this point, the amount is to be determined since I will be assessing your student's individual needs this first week of school. Please contact me with any other questions! Thank you! Deanna L. Taylor, Educational Support Services Coordinator http://my.uen.org/myuen/48778
