DAILY PRACTICE

Each day you will begin by doing a short language exercise in your Daily Language book.  These exercises will refresh your past knowledge of proper grammar and English practices as well as provide us with the opportunity to learn new rules and practices.

JOURNAL

Each week your rough drafts and an edited, final copy of one of the week's entries will be placed in your journal binder.  These will be periodically graded and so need to be in place and in order.  (Copies of the journal entries can be found under "My Documents" on this page.)

READING CHART

Please find a copy of our reading chart on this page under "My Documents."  This chart is worth one third of the reading grade.

CURRENT STUDY

English

For self-starts, every day we review basic English skills with exercises from Daily Language.    In addition, we write on an assigned topic in our journals. 

Spelling

Basic spelling rules are reviewed with work from a spelling text.  However, if a student shows evidence of already having mastered a rule at a 5th grade level, the same rule, at a higher level,  will be practiced by that student for the week.

Reading

Both a basal and novels are used for our reading growth.  Currently we are reading Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli.

Future Problem Solving & Debate

This year, the class will participate in Future Problem Solving activities during class time.  They will also receive some training in debate during our language class.  Those who wish to have advanced training and further participation in these programs will be have an opportunity to join Think, Inc. for early morning classes.

Extras

This year we will be studying word building through gaining an understanding of roots, prefixes, and suffixes.  Our thinking skills will be improved through a variety of exercises such as logic puzzles, plexers, conundrums, etc.
