What are we studying?

In addition to doing intensive word study in each reading class, there will be specific focuses in reading and writing every term. Please view the schedule below for our areas of focus this year.

Elements of Narrative Text

·    Identifying setting, characters, plot, conflict, and theme.

·    Examine problem, outcome, and theme.

·    Retell beginning, middle, end in order (either orally or in writing)

·    Identify the initiating event and the outcome of the problem.

 

Reading to Elementary Students

·    Focus on prosody and fluency

·    Select two children’s books from the library that they can read to a 1st or 2nd grade student.

 

Reader’s Theater

·    Write your own reader’s theater in groups.

·    Use elements of the narrative text

·    Type group plays using appropriate text features.

·    Create props for their plays

·    Practice reading the play with prosody and fluency.

·    Perform their play for their classmates.

 

Text Features

·    Lead into WWII unit?

·   Articles, newspapers, text books

 

WWII Unit

·    Cornell notes with PowerPoint presentations

·    Demonstrate use of WWII vocabulary and terms.

·    Study WWII novel together as a class.

 

Short Essay

·    Clear beginning, middle, end (3 paragraph minimum) summarizing main ideas and important details of the reading.

·    Academic language

 

 

Writing Modern Fairy Tales

·      Describe and use elements of the author’s craft: elaboration, figurative language, direct quotes, humor, satisfying conclusion.

·      Write to an audience: 1st and 2nd graders from the beginning of the year.
