Parents, below is the Math Department's Policies regarding the grading of homework and tests. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Grading Policies
Grade breakdown
Tests & Quizzes: 50%
Homework: 40%
Preparation/Participation: 10%
Tests
Students will have the opportunity to
retake exams if they want to
improve their grades. However,
before students can retake the
exam, they must do corrections for
each problem they missed on the
original exam.
Corrections will be done on a
separate piece of paper so that
students do not erase their
original work. Students will receive
the higher of the two exam grades.
Students may retake exams through
the end of each quarter.
Homework:
Each homework assignment will
be worth 10 points. Up to 7
points will be awarded for
effort and 3 problems will be
checked for correctness with
each problem worth 1 point.
Homework grades will be
awarded as follows:
Effort:
100% of problems attempted
and work shown: 7 points
> 50% of problems attempted
and work shown: 4 points
< 50% of problems attempted
and work shown: 1 point
Homework is due at the
beginning of class the next day.
Students may correct problems
they missed and resubmit the
lesson the day after they get
the assignment back for full points.
Resubmissions will not be accepted
after this date. Please note that
Effort points cannot be made
up.
Homework assignments must
be completed in pencil (no pen),
show all work, and have circled/
boxed answers.
Failure to complete these
requirements will result in a loss
of Effort points.
Late Work
Homework assignments turned
in one day late will incur a
penalty on Effort points. The
maximum Effort points a student
may receive is 3 points. Three
problems will also be checked
for a total possible score of 6/10.
After one day, work will not be accepted.
The Math Department will imple-
ment Maeser Prep’s policy on
absences. This means that for
each day a student is absent,
he/she will have that number
of days to submit make-up
assignments.
Students will receive two coupons
per semester that will allow them
to submit an assignment one day
late and receive full points.
Preparation/Participation
Students are expected to be in
their seats when the bell rings.
They should be prepared with
their homework assignment, a
notebook to take notes, a pencil,
and their textbooks. They will
treat themselves and others with
respect. Students are expected
to participate in classroom dis-
cussion and to remain on-task
throughout the entire class period.
Failure to meet these expecta-
tions will negatively affect the
student’s preparation/participa-
tion score.
Miscellaneous Policies
The two lowest homework scores
and the lowest test score each
semester will be dropped.
Each teacher will have “absent
coupons” available for students
to attach to homework assign-
ments submitted late due to
absence. This will ensure that
the student is not penalized
for late work.
Calculators are designed to be a
tool rather than a crutch. The
Math Department is determined
to instill computational skills in
each student. As such, students
in Elementary Algebra, Interme-
diate Algebra, and Geometry will
only be allowed a calculator
when stated specifically by the
teacher. It is assumed that no
calculator is allowed unless the
teacher gives instructions to
use one. Students in Pre-Calculus
and Calculus will need and use
a graphing calculator.
