Our hope is that as teachers we can become more educated on what to teach your kids about the internet and that as parents you can become more educated on what is out there and the kind of rules you need to set up for your kids. Every Wednesday night this month there will be workshops about how to make the internet safer for your kids. We would love to see as many parents there as we can. This can be a great opportunity to learn from some of the experts in the field of internet safety and we hope to see you there. | |

| Assignments 1. I’ve learned through reading these articles that there are a lot of resources out there for parents and teachers to use to educate their kids. There are so many bad things that can happen on the internet, but if kids are taught how to use the internet safely so many problems can be avoided. 2. According to the article “But I Found it on the Internet” how should teachers train their students? Teachers need to train their students how to recognize a useful websites. A lot of the time kids may not know how to search correctly or how to go through all of the sites that show up and find one that is actually what they need. The point was also made that kids need to learn about plagiarism and that though they have the Internet, they still need to do their own work. 5. Select a video from “Real Life Stories” explain what the story was about, the situation, and how it was handled along with the outcome. I watched Tracking Teresa. In this video it showed how easy it is to get people’s personal information even when they don’t post it in obvious places like a chat room profile. Within 20 minutes and a couple of searches they were able to find out the names of everyone in Teresa’s family, her telephone number and her address. This was really scary to me because Teresa was being really smart about not giving her information right out, but they were still able to find out so much about her. There are a lot of kids that use the Internet and they just give their information out readily. As teachers I think that we need to make sure kids know how to use the Internet safely and how to display their information. 6. Explain what happened with the student and teacher in learning about he Nazis. This was interesting because it shows the variety of information out there. The kids doing the search had been taught about the Nazis and so when they saw some of those points of views, flags could go up immediately. Activities like this are great because they get kids thinking about what they see on the internet. The skill they learn through doing a search like this can transfer over into other searches where they will remember the evaluate the information they are presented. 7. In the NetSmartz for Educators how did the students solve the problem in the video “Terrible Text” ? The students solved their problem about cyberbullying by choosing to not respond and in a way continue to fuel the fire. All of this kids in the video understood that you should report the bullying if it gets out of hand and that others bully because they don’t feel secure about themselves, it’s their problem and not yours. 8. What is NetSmartz 411 and how can students use it? NetSmartz 411 is a resource that parents can use when learning about internet safety. Students can use it to see what safety issues there are on the internet and get answers on how to be safer on the internet. 9. Describe the duties of the Cyber Police and how they help Internet users? The cyber police are just like regular law eforcement, but they deal with cases that have to do with pornography, cyberstalking, missing children tips, and fraud. They also have people that help educate Internet users about crime prevention and the reporting of cybercrimes. | |
