Concert Critiques

Every term, all choir students are required to attend a music concert and type up a FOUR paragraph paper, critiquing the music as well as sharing what they learned by attending this concert.  This term students are required to type their Concert Critique within ONE WEEK of seeing the concert.  See below for details on what will be required in their written submission.

MAKE SURE THAT YOU STAPLE THE GRADING RUBRIC TO THE FRONT OF YOUR PAPER.  AFTER TURNING IT IN, YOU WILL RECEIVE IT BACK WITH MARKINGS DIRECTING YOU TO WHAT CORRECTIONS YOU MUST MAKE.  YOU THEN HAVE ONE WEEK TO TURN IN YOUR FINAL DRAFT.  YOUR PAPER WILL NOT RECEIVE A GRADE UNTIL YOU HAVE MADE THE CORRECTIONS AND STAPLED THE FINAL PAPER TO THE RUBRIC AND ROUGH DRAFT.

Don't forget that this term, your FINAL drafts are due by October 16th.

Writing Prompt

After attending a live concert, lasting a minimun of 30 minutes, write a four paragraph paper about your experience.  Use the following as your guide for each paragraph:

Paragraph One:  Tell me what concert you saw, where and when it was held and who the performers were.

Paragraph Two:  What type of music was performed at this concert?  (vocal?  Instrumental?  Dance?)   What was the dress and appearance of the performer(s)?  Was it appropriate for the occasion?  Why or why not?

Paragraph Three:  Using AT LEAST 3 of our music vocabulary words, describe the actual music to me.  (Examples of words:  tempo, rhythm, dynamics, balance, blend, texture,  intonation, diction)  Choose one or two of the songs and describe them to me in detail.  How did they make you feel?  How did they help the storyline or mood that was intended for this show/concert?

Paragraph Four:  Any time we go to a concert, we should be aware of what we, as musicians, would do the same as or differently than the performers we have seen.  In regards to this particular concert, what is something you would do the same if you were giving this concert?  What would you do differently?  Why did you choose these things?

How will I be graded?

This assignment is worth 40 pts.  Up to 10 pts. will be given for EACH of the following areas:   Ideas and Content, Conventions, Organization, and Voice.

When you turn in your rough draft WITHIN 7 DAYS OF SEEING THE CONCERT, I will mark any places that need to be changed or fixed and return them to you.  You then have 7 more days to turn in your FINAL DRAFT, at which point you will receive your grade.  Good luck!
