Student Notes

Keep your reading skills sharp and have fun doing it....

Remember our class goal of reading 20 minutes per night.

The Utah state core curriculum for 2nd grade mandates that 20 minutes per day of reading time is necessary for students, to enhance fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and phoenemic awareness.

Remember to initial each day read on the calendar brought home monthly, the length of time read by your child, to your child, or with your child. Children can count any of these three ways towards minutes read.

Thanks for those who make reading a priority!

Parent Notes

Dear Parents,

Children can receive 5 points daily towards their grade in reading breakout groups. As explained in previous letters, as a second grade team we feel strongly about the benefit of small group instruction; hence, our frequent utilization of centers during this time. These rotations include a variety of activities geared at reinforcing student learning. Any unfinished business becomes homework and should be returned the next day.

Please be sure and sign your child's learning plan on a daily basis. Even though students are reminded, some of the children are failing to check the square which shows homework for that night. Remember each child should always practice their spelling words nightly and complete any unfinished assignments.

Thanks again for your support in your child's learning.

Ms. Gulledge

Heads Up One and All....

Homeroom:

  • Spelling words were sent home yesterday. Please review these words daily with your child.
  • This is an exciting week as we learn a new song, "Buffalo Gals" and discuss the meanings of two poems, "Who Has Seen the Wind?" and "Something Told the Wild Geese." El Greco's oil painting entitled, "View of Toledo" will be introduced and we will use it to focus on mood, color, and personal perspectives.

Saxon Math 3:

  • Parents, your children will have math homework daily. Please be sure you check their work then return it to me so I can record it. Homework is a necessary part of learning, especially with math.

Reading Group:

  • The past few days our center activity has increased as we have been doing our reading "Checkouts". Students have been focusing on the various sounds of the letter "y", as well as using "hard words" selected from their reading in sentences.
