ANNOUNCEMENTS

Welcome to First Grade!

We are excited to learn and practice reading, spelling, writing, and math. Please check your student's homework folder DAILY.

You can help your child at home by playing rhyming games, reading together daily, counting many different objects, and grouping those objects in different ways.  TALK to your child about what he or she is doing, what you are doing, and the world around us to develop oral language and vocabulary.

IMPORTANT ONLINE LINKS
WHAT ARE WE LEARNING?

Reading:

We will be using the Imagine It! reading program this year.  It is divided into 10 units.  The first unit will focus on reviewing concepts from Kindergarten and beginning reading skills.  We will focus on learning sight words and blending letter sounds together to make words.  Those words will also be practiced in the decodable stories that will be sent home for practice.  We will also be building vocabulary and writing in a journal daily.  Help your child at home by letting them express themselves in writing without having to correct everything.  Read together daily for at least 15 minutes.  The reading tab on this page has many links to online games and activities that will help your child practice what we are learning in class and to even extend their learning further.

Math:

Everyday Mathematics is a program based on national standards.  Unit 1 is focused on helping students learn the procedures that will help them throughout the rest of the year.  First graders need to be able to use numbers to 100, count money up to 25 cents, tell time to the hour and half hour, read and create a graph, solve story problems, and use measurement tools.  We will also practice basic addition and subtraction facts to mastery.  Under the math tab on this webpage there are links to online websites your student can use to practice what we are learning in class.  You can also go to the 1st grade math curriculum link at the USOE.org website for more information on the skills your child needs to develop.

Interconnections:

This is our social studies and science curriculum.  We will begin the year with our All About Me unit.  We will learn about ourselves as well as the other members of our classroom.  We will also be talking about communities during the first term.  We will learn what makes a community then discuss our school, family and neighborhood communities.  There are links to online games and activities under the Interconnections tab on this webpage to learn more about what we will be discussing in class.
